What is being announced?

The Blue Ridge HealthCare Board of Directors are pleased to announce the approval of a comprehensive Management Services Agreement (MSA) with UNC Health.

The partnership between Blue Ridge (with campuses in Morganton and Valdese) and UNC Health will enhance the quality of healthcare and grow specialty and other important services right here in the Mountain Region in ways not possible otherwise. UNC Health and Blue Ridge share a dedicated commitment to rural healthcare and will focus together on delivering an even higher level of care for those we serve. It is UNC Health Blue Ridge’s vision to build a leading healthcare option for its Mountain Region by creating a center of coordination of care in the areas. Joining UNC Health allows Blue Ridge to increase specialty services and grow access to an expanded network of care right here in our region.

What does this announcement mean?

Joining UNC Health allows Blue Ridge to strengthen rural healthcare throughout our region. Through the partnership, it is UNC Health’s vision to build a leading healthcare option for its Mountain Region by joining forces to create a center of coordination of care in the area. In partnership with UNC Health, we will further enhance the medical capabilities of our providers and expand the services Blue Ridge offers today. Importantly, our partnership allows for new and additional specialty services in our community, keeping care local and growing our abilities to serve the diverse needs of our region.

Why is Blue Ridge aligning with UNC Health?

UNC Health shares our commitment for providing high-quality, compassionate and strong local healthcare, which made a long-term regional partnership a natural fit. We are also focused on ensuring high-quality services not only remain in rural communities but also expand and grow.

What led to this decision?

The Blue Ridge Board of Directors has always been focused on securing the very best future for local healthcare in our region. As UNC Health Blue Ridge, we are committed to enhancing and growing access to high-quality healthcare close to home for those we serve today and for generations to come.

Did UNC Health buy Blue Ridge?

No.Blue Ridge entered into a comprehensive Management Services Agreement that closely aligns Blue Ridge and UNC Health as they work together to enhance the quality of healthcare and grow specialty and other important services right here in the Mountain Region.

What does this mean for teammates?

Do you anticipate any job losses as a result of the partnership?

No. Current teammates will continue with the organization. UNC Health Blue Ridge recognizes the value of our team of healthcare professionals and has committed to maintain and enhance teammate and provider satisfaction and retention efforts.

What This Means for Patients and Community Partners

What does this mean for patients and the community?

As we move through the process, we remain focused on providing patients with the same quality healthcare services they have come to know and expect from us. Our patients will continue to have access to their providers without any disruption to care.

What insurance providers will Blue Ridge accept?

UNC Health Blue Ridge will continue to accept all current insurance plans. Patients will continue to have access to their current providers without any disruption.

Next Steps

What happens next?

Beginning October 1, 2021, UNC Health and Blue Ridge intend to:

Build a leading healthcare option for UNC Health’s Mountain Region. We will do this over time by joining forces to create a center for coordination of care in the area with our leadership teams and boards working closely together;

Form a high-performing network of facilities and clinicians focused on providing the best patient care, increasing affordability and efficiency, engaging with patients and local communities to elevate public health, and keeping more care local by increasing access to primary and higher-level specialty services;

Enhance and grow Blue Ridge’s clinical programs and service lines including adding appropriate specialty healthcare services at Blue Ridge and UNC Health facilities;

Improve access to research and clinical trials for citizens across the Mountain Region;

Maintain and enhance employee and provider satisfaction and retention;

Leverage UNC Health’s existing population health solutions to the benefit of the residents of our region; and

Collectively explore innovative rural healthcare models that will make UNC Health and Blue Ridge a leader in value-based care regionally and across the state.
